Deprived of social interactions and necessitated by the pandemic, people are more in tune with their wellbeing. House plants have become an important part of self-care. It is now an important part of people's lives- to take care of something and be in charge of a living being when everything else is seemingly out of control. 

While older generations have dismissed “the Millennial plant revolution” as a social media fueled obsession, plant startup The Sill knows it goes well beyond trendy aesthetics. Plants are an embodiment of health that we can look at and be inspired by. The plant movement is here to stay, and with that there is a balancing act between immediate aesthetic gratification and the personal fulfillment of nurturing another living being.

In the last few years, demand for indoor plants among city dwellers has soared, according to some retailers—especially among millennials. The National Gardening Survey found that of the 6 million people who started gardening in 2016, 80% of them were aged 18 to 34. Refinery29 has even declared that “plant ladies are the new cat ladies.”

Startups like The Sill sell a lot of the same kinds of plants that nurseries do. But the selection is usually curated around low-maintenance plants for indoor spaces, and additions like pots, packaging, and shipping are crucial aspects of their business. The race is on now to become the Amazon of plant businesses. As with many businesses, logistics is a big hurdle, especially for delivering a big item. However, many startups have challenged the preconceived notion of what can be successfully shipped by lightening the load, using sturdier materials, and shipping from local warehouses.

So The Sill doesn’t just sell you a plant (along with basic care instructions). It also allows you to ask questions of the company’s plant experts — and with the opening of its first brick-and-mortar stores in New York City, it also offers weekly workshops. The company says it sold more than 75,000 products in the last six months, with sales up 500 percent year-over-year, and anticipated revenue for the year of nearly $5 MM.

Bloomscape was founded by Michigan designer and entrepreneur Justin Mast and launched in 2018 with the goal of reinventing how plants move about the country and arrive on customers’ doorsteps. What makes Bloomscape different are the steps it has made to ensure a better delivery process and its logistics operations behind-the-scenes. The company has filed a patent on parts of its plant packaging technology, where plants and pots are held securely at the right temperature. It also uses a proprietary soil mix that has a bonding agent that holds the soil together better during shipping and better protects the roots.

Funding & Deal Highlights:

Online course startup Thinkific has raised $22 MM in new funding. Thinkific is different from businesses such as MasterClass and Skillshare because it doesn’t create, distribute or monetize online classes itself. Instead, it’s built a platform where anyone can create their own courses, then sell them on their own websites.

New York-based Rally, which has built a platform for owners to list rare collectibles, and for others to take investments in them starting at $1, has raised $17 MM in an investment of its own, on the back of reaching 200,000 users investing in some 120 “IPOs”, equivalent to more than $15 MM worth of assets, according to the startup.

French startup Exotec has raised a $90 MM Series C round led by 83North, with existing investors Iris Capital and Breega also participating. Other existing investors include 360 Capital. The company has been working on semi-automated warehouses for e-commerce clients.

PayCargo, which has built a suite of cloud-based payment and financing services for the cargo industry, is announcing $35 MM in funding to expand its business in the wake of COVID-19.

Arista Networks, a leader in cognitive cloud networking, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Awake Security, a Network Detection and Response (NDR) platform provider that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with human expertise to autonomously hunt and respond to insider and external threats.

Cerberus and a rival investment firm have told HSBC they would buy its French retail arm for a symbolic one euro provided the British bank ploughs more than 500 MM euros into the business, sources told Reuters.

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with ArcelorMittal S.A., pursuant to which Cleveland-Cliffs will acquire substantially all of the operations of ArcelorMittal USA LLC and its subsidiaries for approximately $1.4 BN. Upon closure of the transaction, Cleveland-Cliffs will be the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America.

Vista Outdoor Inc. on Monday announced it acquired Remington Outdoor Co. Inc.'s ammunition and accessories businesses. Vista Outdoor has agreed to pay $81.4 million for the assets, after being named a successful bidder in the auction process tied to Remington's Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Vista is obtaining Remington's ammunition manufacturing plant in Lonoke, Ark. and related intellectual property, including the Remington brand and trademarks.

EnPro Industries, Inc., a leading technology company that uses materials science to push the boundaries of the semiconductor, life sciences, and other technology industries, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Alluxa, Inc., a privately held, California-based company. Alluxa is an industrial technology company that provides specialized optical filters and thin-film coatings for the most challenging applications in the industrial technology, life sciences, and semiconductor markets. The company’s products are developed through a proprietary coating process using state-of-the-art, advanced equipment.

Mavenir, a leading provider of end-to-end cloud-native Network Software Provider for Communications Service Providers (CSPs) announces today that it has acquired ip.access Ltd, a leading 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G-ready small cell solutions provider.
